Medieval Muslim scholars such as Ibn Sina, Al-Khwarizmi, and Al-Ghazali achieved their great discoveries through a combination of rigorous study and spiritual retreat (Tadabbur and Khalwat).
For a Muslim, here are the key practices and steps to
purify the mirror of the heart, allowing it to catch the light of inspiration
and spiritual enlightenment from Allah SWT:
1. Dedicated Quiet Time
Set aside 15–30 minutes daily (ideally after Tahajjud or Fajr prayers). Turn off your
phone, turn off the lights, sit alone on your prayer mat, and recite dhikr with complete focus. This
quiet state shifts your brainwaves into the alpha/theta state, where creative
ideas and enlightened insights often emerge.
2. Deep Observation (Tadabbur)
The scholars received enlightenment because they
observed nature in meticulous detail. The Qur'an frequently commands us to be
people of reflection (Afala
Tatafakkarun — "Will you not then reflect?").
·
Practical Tip: When studying or observing something,
do not look merely at the surface. Ask yourself: "Why did Allah design it this way?"
Connect natural science and geometry to the greatness of His creation.
3. Seeking Guidance Through Prayer
Whenever Ibn Sina faced an impasse in medical or
philosophical problems, he would go to the mosque to pray two rak'ahs and supplicate for
guidance from the All-Knowing (Al-'Alim).
·
Qur'anic Supplication for Knowledge (QS. Ta-Ha: 114):
Rabbi zidni 'ilman
"O my Lord,
increase me in knowledge."
·
Supplication for Wisdom (QS. Ash-Shu'ara: 83):
Rabbi hab li hukman
wa-alhiqni bish-shaliheen
"O my Lord, grant
me wisdom and join me with the righteous."
Regularly reflect on how Allah maintains the balance of
forces in physics, sound waves, or optics so that the universe remains stable.
Step-by-Step Spiritual Practice
Phase 1: Active Dhikr (Takhalli – Cleansing the Vessel)
1.
Seek Forgiveness (Istighfar) – 5 Minutes: Slowly recite Astaghfirullah. Visualize
black spots (ego, arrogance, or showing off in your work) washing away from
your heart.
2.
Invoke Blessings upon the Prophet (Salawat) – 5 Minutes:
Recite Allahumma shalli
'ala Muhammad. Salawat
acts as a spiritual frequency that attracts peace and unlocks blocked doors of
wisdom.
Phase 2: Silent Retreat (Khalwat & Tafakkur)
After 15 minutes of active dhikr, let your tongue rest and your body become
completely still. This is the essence of spiritual retreat:
·
Contemplation of Nature & Science: In total
silence, begin to reflect (tadabbur).
Think about how Allah designed mathematical order into physics or how electron
flow operates in a transistor.
·
Heart Awareness (Muraqabah): Position yourself as a receiver of
signals. Become aware of your breath in and out as a gift from Him. Empty your
mind of worldly ambitions and focus solely on adoring Allah's greatness.
·
Intuitive Breakthroughs: In this deep state of calm
following dhikr, your
brainwaves enter theta mode. In this relaxed and clear condition, fragments of
ideas, animated visualizations, mathematical solutions, or technical insights
often flash into your mind suddenly.
Pre-Retreat Supplication
Before closing your eyes, recite this prayer slowly and
absorb its meaning in your heart:
"O
Allah, O All-Knowing (Ya 'Alim), O Creator (Ya Khaliq), I sit here humbling
myself before You, emptying my heart of worldly matters. I intend to cleanse
the mirror of my heart from arrogance, ego, and heedlessness. Guide my
thoughts, open the doors of Your wisdom, and allow this servant of Yours to
catch a spark of Your vast knowledge, so that I may create engineering,
scientific, and artistic works that benefit humanity in this world and the
hereafter. Aamiin."
Visualizations & Inner Affirmations
If your mind wanders during the total silence phase,
use these techniques in your mind:
·
Design Visualization: Imagine molecular structures,
electron flows, sound frequency vibrations, or mathematical matrices. See them
moving in perfect harmony under Allah's control.
·
Inner Affirmation: Say silently within your heart,
without moving your tongue:
"The entire universe moves
in Your formulas and order. My body is still, my soul listens, and my heart is
ready to receive Your guidance."
Post-Practice Action
As soon as the 30 minutes are up, do not check your
phone or jump into daily activities immediately:
·
Keep a blank piece of paper and a
pen next to your prayer mat.
·
Immediately write or sketch any
visualization ideas, technical solutions, or creative thoughts that flashed
through your mind during the silent phase. Inspiration arrives in rapid visual
flashes and will fade quickly if not written down right away.
